How to Build Your Wedding Day Timeline
A good wedding day timeline is the difference between a day that flows and a day that feels rushed. Here's how to build one that actually works.
Start with your non-negotiables
Ceremony time and reception end time are usually fixed. Work everything else around those two anchors.
Work backwards from the ceremony
If your ceremony starts at 3pm, when does the bridal party need to be ready? When does the photographer arrive? When does hair and makeup start? Working backwards from a fixed point makes it easier to see where the gaps are.
Build in more time than you think you need
Every wedding runs slightly behind somewhere. Getting ready takes longer than expected. Family photos take more time than planned. If your timeline is tight, those small delays compound quickly.
Build buffer time into getting ready, family photos, and the gap between ceremony and reception.
Share the timeline with everyone
Your photographer, celebrant, caterer, and any other key vendors should all have a copy of the final timeline. Everyone working from the same document means fewer questions on the day and fewer things falling through the gaps.
Let your coordinator own it
If you have a day-of coordinator, hand the timeline to them. Their job is to keep everything on track without you having to watch the clock.
